A hidden treasure on the borders of Surrey, Kent & Sussex.
The Crown began life in the 1500s as a late-medieval Tudor hall house, its west-side solar wing still survives today. The main building was altered in the early 1700s and, by the mid-1700s, had become a public house offering accommodation and refreshment to travellers. It has welcomed locals and travellers alike for over 300 years.
Two characteristic bars share an intimate atmosphere of open fires, exposed beams and Victorian panelling. It’s an independent free house with changing guest ales from local breweries. Close to the Pilgrims’ Way from Winchester to Canterbury, Old Oxted was long a stop for weary travellers. The pub takes its name from its place on the crown of the hill, with a steep high street of period cottages that run down like a Cornish fishing village to the harbour.
